Diagnosis:


Roewer (1934) characterized the subfamily as follows:


"Ammotrechidae, deren 2. und 3. Tarsus jeweils l-gliedrig und deren 4. Tarsus 3-gliedrig ist; 2. und 3. Tibia dorsal-apikal nicht bedornt, ventralapikal mit 2 Dornborsten. Das erste Glied des 3-gliedrigen 4. Tarsus ist das längste, das zweite nur so lang wie dick, das dritte etwas kürzer als das erste (Abb. 335, f-k)."


[Ammotrechidae whose 2nd and 3 Tarsi are each 1-segmented and whose 4th Tarsi are 3-segmented; 2nd and 3 Tibia dorsoapically undadorned, ventroapically with 2 spinelike setae. The first segment of the 3-segmented 4th Tarsus is the longest, the second only as long as wide, the third slightly shorter than the first (Fig. 335, f-k).]

Roewer (1934) recognized 10 genera within this subfamily when he first established it. Of these, Ammotrechelis Roewer 1934 was later transferred to the Daesiidae (Maury 1987), Ammotrechona was synonymized with Ammotrechella (Armas 2004), Tetracleobis was synonymized with Pseudocleobis (Maury 1976), and the rest continue to be recognized within the subfamily.
